This easy going beautiful paddle is one of the
finest on the Oregon Coast.
Put-in at Silt
Coos Lake, paddle 3 miles to the ocean and
return. At about midway there is a small dam
that is portaged over (easy, designed to be
portaged). The trip begins with put-in on Silt
Coos Lake. Paddle to the outlet and then
towards the ocean. There are homes/summer
homes/boat houses in this segment of the river.
After a bit the houses end and the dunes begin.
The conifers become more sparse. As you
approach the ocean the Silt Coos flows through
dunes country...and then on to the ocean. It
is recommended that you not paddle the Silt Coos
during months of heavy water flow because you
will need to paddle against the current on your
return. Directions: The Silt-Coos
area is located about 120 miles north of Gold
Beach. When traveling north on Highway 101 you
will exit to the right at the Westlake / Dunes
City / Pacific Avenue exit. Continue east
on Pacific Ave which ends at the put-in.
If you reach Florence you have gone about 3
miles too far. |
